Mosport Turn 8
I'm picking up some stuff here that I'm eager to try, thanks all.

So...I posted this in the Tremblant carousel thread, but maybe it should have a thread of its own.

Turn 8 @ Mosport.  I know some cut the first turtles closer than I, some treat it as an apex.  I understand why it's a racing line, but I've never been able to make it feel as good as going in closer to mid-track.  I feel like I lose too much speed in the centre of the turn.

Who will throw me a bone?

Bill

I've started to spend more time down low in the early part of the corner. It seems like there is a bit more positive camber down there and the car seems to stick quite well.

It's also a shorter distance so you will probably save 20-30 feet. Analyzing my data from the logger, it seems many of my fastest laps are the ones where I covered the shotest distance. Duh...

I'm interested in turn 8 also. Last season I was working on the other corners and I generally took a cautious line through 8. This season I want to gain some time in 8, so thanks for posting this up, Bill.

The biggest thing that I found with taking the line into the first set of turtles was that instead of initiating my braking at or slightly before the hump, I was braking halfway between the hump and the turtles, and that alone picked up many car lengths on people taking the outer line. In my opinion, it's also a much safer braking zone because you have lots of run-off room. Then you just let your car drift out a little to pick up the concrete patch and turtles, and what I found was that I was hitting the same speed thru the corner, only I was approaching it over a shorter distance and with much later braking.

Many thanks, guys, I am emboldened to work on it...in just about exactly a month! Can't wait.

Peter...maybe one lesson is that what feels faster ain't always so. I will try to get a feel for using the camber there.

Ian...thanks, good point about the braking zone. I don't think I gave the line enough of a chance in the past to really pick this up.

Once you get a feel for turn 8 doing that, try it in turn 2 as well, it's a hoot! :-)

My car is a momentum car - low HP but pretty good handling and brakes - so I'm already well over the hump before I start braking. I now need to learn to use less brake in 8 than what I've been doing. Practise!

Ian, good point about 2. In fact, I go into 2 pretty shallow, and it works well for me...I then hit the first apex early, the second late.

But no matter what I do, there seems to be this damn vette filling my mirrors when I get to the bottom :-)

Ian Peter...I like the line through 8 you have suggested...got it working, thanks.

It works a lot better when your clutch pedal is functional, my weekend was spent trying to work around the big spring we had to put on it so that it would return after a heel/toe downshift. :-)

I have found with turn 8 on a momentum car to take 8 wide, I don't use brakes and don't lift until the late apex. My car I don't lift for 1 or 2 either. a little brake for 3 and a little more for 5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfqLuffda1g please comment on the lines I chose. good or bad I would like to improve more
