The top of my personal must read list is the Speed Secrets series of books. I have read severalof the more polular books on high performance driving and some are better than others. But by far the best was Speed Secrets (1 and 2). Ross Bentley covers roughly the same topics as the others, but his delivery is so unbelievable easy to understand it's an order of magnitude better than the others. They are also small and easy to read. Inner Speed Secrets is also really good. It deals more with intellectual issues that are preventing us from driving at our best. If that's not enough, there are also aothers inthe series to deal with managing your carreer, running a team, etc. I understand there is also now one on Autocross but I have not read it.

I 've read three of Ross's great Speed Secret books (Race Driving Techniques 1 & 2 - and 6 Perfect Driver) as a student of advanced driving and can highly recommend them to those progressing through the DE ranks - easy to read and retain. For those who want info about one Ross' seminars given to UCR Porsche Club and Trillium BMW Club can check out my article (on this site) called Ross Bentley's Speed Secret: High Performance Driving is Mental !

I too would recommend the series. I liked #1, #2, & #6 the best. #4 really was more geared towards the drivers coach and #5 was written more for the guy that wants to make a career of professional racing. I read through them looking for something to get out of each one, I just found that 1,2, & 6 I retained the most information. I still go back and do a quick review of those 3 books during the week leading up to an event. Definitely helps with the mindset.

Peter have you seen the "Electronic Driver Coach" and if so would you recommend it or the books?

@comatb - If I may, I'd suggest the books as primary. The Electronic Driver Coach that Ross has put together is an excellent resource tool as it functions a bit like a decision tree. However, it will simply provide a user brief statements of suggestion based on preset criteria. If you require (or are interested in) more of the "why" behind these suggestions, the books all offer that in-depth information. Further, in the event you need help determining what you should be specifically working on at any given time, a Speed Secrets coach at the track with you could go a long way in helping with that. Speed Secrets Driver Development Services at info@speedsecrets.com, or call 425-698-5028 FULL DISCLOSURE; I am a Speed Secrets coach. Peter C., if my reply here is deemed inappropriate or too commercially oriented, my apologies in advance. You may manage the post as you see best fit to. Thanks! - Kevin York |

Thanks for putting that link up Kevin, I checked it out. It appears as though the system is set up like a generic search tool. How easy is it to operate once the software is downloaded? I'm interested to find out how others use it and how it has benefitted them. Kevin, do you use the program for yourself, and if you do, how does it help you?

The electronic coach looks interesting but it would be nice if there was a demo version we could try out before shelling out $200. I have the greatest respect for Ross but would like to see how well it works. |

Ross... The electronic driving coach might work better as a web application. If you keep the interface super simple, we could use it at the track from a Blackberry. You could also charge a low monthly fee to use it rather than a one time charge. I keep paying $10/month for the TelNav app on my Blackberry even though I hardly ever use it. It's easier for someone to commit to $10/m than $200. In the end you will sell more and earn more. Monthly also gives you the option to offer a free trial. But really the goal should be to have it on the Blackberry/iPhone. A laptop is so much less convenient for what we do. You could be sitting with your student at the lunch table and just whip out your phone... Developing for the BB/iPhone is as simple as creating a web site with very simple navigation. You can use the same interface from any PC. My 2¢ - Peter |

When I'm self-coaching, it serves as a good memory jog when I'm struggling. |

Kevin, I tried to respond by email but I guess it didn't work. I'm trying to get to Beaver Run on the 27th. Will you be there?

Kevin, I do see value in it but I'm not completely sold on it yet (I need tires first). I briefly looked around inside the link but couldn't find the system requirements. Do you know what they are?
