As someone recently asked, I absolutely love My POV.1 solid state video recorder. See here: http://www.driversmeeting.com/pcarroll/blog/5/
The Enduro is a Samsung Camcorder, and the other two are from the POV.1.
The POV.1 can take 8GB with a simple firmware update. It took literally 2min from download to completion...
![]() I called VIO and apparently the only difference is the camera head on the 1.5. The camera head is orange and has the cable hardwired. That's all. The new head should be more durable and they save the cost of one pretty complex connector. Lessons learned...
If you buy a card for it, get one that's a lot faster than required. Even though a class-4 card is fast enough on paper, they occasionally produce corrupt video files. Class-6 or better yet one rated for HD video would be better. They say Sandisk Extreme III but that's getting ridiculous. I bought a class-4 card for $19 and had some bad video when I tested it. You get what you pay for.
You might also want the Car Power adapter as it also has a tripod thread for solid mounting. And the camera extension cable. I found the 1m cord a bit short. Right now I have the recorder wrapped in a towel and stuffed in a walkie-talkie pouch.
If you read on the web site there were also some issues with rechargeable batteries and the camera thinking the battery is low. I've not tried rechargables yet.
I think the 110 degree (o) wide angle may be a bit too wide for me. That's like a 15mm fisheye on 35mm. They said they will have a 73o (29mm) version in April. I think that would be ideal. A regular camcorder is usually about 45mm/51o (35 equiv) and with a wide angle adapter is more like 31mm/70o. So 73 degrees sounds about right.
To convert between degrees and 35mm focal length see here:

Be sure to click on 35mm.
The hardest part for me was figuring out how to edit the files. The software that comes with it is crap. I wouldn't even bother installing it. I found a relatively cheap program at AVS4YOU.com that does a decent job.
VIO also got back and said other packages can do it if you get the codecs right. I've not tried again yet. Apparently you have to uninstall DivX as it is the right codec but is not capable of editing. Then you install XDiv (open source equivalent).

We've been seeing a lot of video from the POV.1 at TrackVision central for a year now, and its up there with the best that standard resolution can do. The images are very crisp. The video is saved in XVid / DivX format, which follows the MPEG4 Part 2 ASP standard. It uses all the nice tricks, and produces great video. No question that its a nice package, and that it produces very nice results. Frame size is limited to 720 x 480, standard resolution [no HD]. Peter tells me it can record 16:9 letterboxed in the 720 frame, too. PointofViewCameras.com has a package deal for $559.95 at present, which is a sharp price! |

That's cheap. They just came out with a new model but it's just a cheaper version of the same thing. It might be a good time to pick one up. |
