Let's make use of this site for it's intended purpose. I'll start with a video of my race at Sebring last month (2009 PBOC Winterfest, Jan 14-18).
Eric and I went down to Sebring with his car, and this is our second year attending the PBOC Winterfest. Great event as usual, and fun was had by all. The car was great, and needed very little work to keep going (blew a strut, and a rad cap, had spares). Here are the specs on the car:
- 1997 328is, originally built for Motorola Cup, from the showroom floor
- Modified by 8legs Racing for Canadian Touring Car Championship in 2007
- Classified as DM for PBOC, weight around 2600lbs
- Motor is stock M52 (2.8L), OBD1, cams, injectors, bolt-ons
- Toyo R888 tires (255/40/17, though usually we run 235/40/17)
This year, we decided to do all the races: 6hr night enduro, 90 min enduro, and both sprint races. Our results were very suprisingly positive in the 6hr enduro: We eneded up 5th overall, and only 42sec off 3rd place! Our strategy was to make 3 fuel stops, and alternate driving shifts. This worked very well, but unfortunately not perfectly ... the last 5 laps of the race I really had to baby the car since it was getting fuel starvation all over the track! All in all, we're very proud of our finish, and intend to do even better next year
We also did ok in the 90 minute enduro. Qualified quite nicely in the 1 lap we had, and finished well. However, In my opinion this race is very skewed towards high-HP cars due to the mandatory 5min stop. Having a car that does NOT need a fuel stop is a great disadvantage in this race since there is no possibility of making up any time otherwise. Making the fuel stop optional would level the playing field a little!
For the sprint races, Eric drove on Saturday, and I finished the weekend on Sunday. Here is my Sunday race video. My start sucked big time ... should have dropped a gear since the car was taking a long time to pull out of low RPM. The last 10 minutes looks boring, but I was fighting very hard to keep a red Porsche behind me (the Caymen I passed very early in the race)! He gave me quite a good run, but with defensive driving, I managed to keep him behind me. The car seemed down on power and torque, and we later confirmed that the compression was low in cylinders 1 and 4 (140 and 90!). The engine has seince been pulled and is in pieces waiting from some internal goodies! Enjoy!
